    GIMPing

Today I played around with GIMP and modified two images.

The first is of my son playing basketball:
    • I isolate him
    • desaturated the background
    • applied linear motion blur to the background
    • applied a canvas texture to the background
    • cropped to isolate the action
I was happy with the overall effect.

The second was an attempt to cartoonify myself. This proved to be quite tricky. I couldn't simply reduce the number of colours in the image - it resulted in too much banding, loss of detail and edges. It took longer than I had expected. Not too happy with the final colours, but on the whole, it doesn't look too bad as a cartoon avatar.

i like these both, i agree w/ zebru/raluca... i'm always trying to get cartoon versions of myself to use as icons/profile pics but haven't been able to photoshop one yet...

@zebru: thanks. I think it came out very well. I never know how things will turn out when I play with GIMP (usually, I just end up discarding my work).

The cartoon version of me was a lot harder than I thought.

@cindy: making a cartoon avatar was harder than I thought. The basic "recipe" i used was: (1) extract all the edges using a very strong edge filter (I think I used Sobel), (2) clean up all the noise in the edge image, (3) reduce the number of colours in the image (I think I went to 8), (4) cleanup the obvious banding - makes the image very flat, (5) fix the colours on the lips and eyes, (6) overlay the edges to give the image some form.

I orginally hoped I could just (reduce the number of colours - but it didn't turn out very well.
